Tumour biologist Paula Bousquet has published a paper looking into how the hypoxic tumour environment may contribute to resistance to therapies and the ultimate progression of locally advanced rectal cancers (LARC). In her research, Paula shows that serum reactive oxygen species and damaged mitochondrial DNA may be markers capable of illustrating both mitochondrial metabolism and those systemic inflammatory processes that lead to less positive outcomes for LARC patients.
